Zircon Flour uses

Ceramic Industries

Zirco plus is primarily used in the ceramic industry to improve whiteness and opacity. Zirco plus can be used directly on ceramic compositions and also used as engobes to produce a white and opaque layer that covers the colour of the ceramic product. In order to create glossy, opaque and shiny white glazes, Zirco plus may be utilized as a raw material in ceramic glazes or in frit compositions. Zirco plus is resistant to chemical, mechanical, and scratch damage due to its extreme hardness, this increases the abrasion resistance of glazed surfaces, especially in floor tiles.

Foundries

The physical-chemical characteristics of zircon flour make it perfect for use in sand casting, investment casting and die casting as a mold coating. Zircon’s low wettability and consistent grain fineness enable the production of high-precision castings with excellent surface polish, It prevents the mineral from adhering to the cast metal and prevents the metal from penetrating the mould. It also enhances the amount of recoverable sand, and due to its chemical resilience, particularly at high temperatures, it is recyclable. Zircon flour can also be used as a refractory wash for glost kilns, as a fine constituent in pressed zircon refractory forms in refractory paints and acts as filler for epoxy resins.

Using zircon reduces the post-casting procedures, such as machining and cleaning of the cast pieces, because the materials improved dimensional accuracy and surface polish.

Refractories

Zirco plus can be utilized in variety of refractory applications, such as refractory mortar, firebricks, and refractory linings for glass and metal furnaces, as well as fibres, nozzles, sliding gates, valves, and grouts. The addition of zircon to refractory materials improves their resistance to thermal shock. Zircon’s low thermal conductivity results in extremely reduced heat losses. Zircon-based refractories are ideally suited for use in the high-temperature regions of a furnace due to their resistance to corrosion, low defect rate, and high manufacturing quality. It is also employed in the formulation of refractory cements, washes for refractory slabs, and ceramic rollers, besides other related applications.

Other applications

Glass / Fibre Glass

Zircon flour can absorb X-rays released by the electron gun in the cathode ray tube and it can also raise the glass’s index of refraction and hardness. Zirco plus can be used to mak faceplate glass for plasma displays.

Tiny amounts of zircon can enhance the mechanical strength of glass and confer alkali resistance to the glass fibres used in glass-reinforced concrete.

Plastics

Zirco plus is ideal for applications requiring an inert, finely milled heat and chemically resistant filler, such as epoxy formulations, encapsulating resins, silicone, vinyl, and other resins, where it is used to increase the thermal stability by diffusing localised heat and to increase electrical resistance and insulation values.
